Ear Wax Irrigation
Nowadays, it can be challenging to get ear wax removed at a doctor’s surgery. We can usually see you at short notice and can generally remove ear wax in one visit without any pre-treatment of the wax, although the softer it is, the better.
Ear syringing is an outdated method of ear wax removal, and it is no longer recommended but is often confused with ear wax irrigation.
Irrigation ear wax removal is an ideal method of ear cleaning for many people. Irrigation is very comfortable, and in many cases, the ear wax blockage is removed in minutes.
The treatment is not suitable for anyone with a perforation in the eardrum. It is not advisable to introduce water into the middle ear as it may become lodged and result in an infection. Otherwise, it is suitable for most people and many like it because it thoroughly washes away all traces of ear wax.
If you have had any of the following issues, you may not be a suitable candidate for irrigation wax removal:
- Perforations to the eardrums
- Previous ear surgery
- Ongoing ear infections
- Contra-advice from your GP
How irrigation Ear Wax Removal Is Done
The irrigation water is warmed to body temperature for comfort. Using a controlled pressurised water flow, we gently remove the build-up of ear wax. The ear wax is softened, broken up and washed out of the ear. While we irrigate your ear, we will gently pull your ear at different angles to ensure the water has full access to your ear canal.
No Cotton Buds Please
The best thing you can do for your ears is leave them alone, they are meant to be self-cleaning, but some people need a bit of help now and then. Ear wax is produced naturally and is seldom a problem since it works its way naturally out of the ear.
The regular use of cotton buds or other blunt objects inserted into the ear may cause ear wax to become impacted and moved further down inside your ear canal, which may increase any discomfort and pain you have and even damage your eardrum. The natural process of wax leaving your ear is often helped by the softening action of water when showering or bathing. However, when too much wax builds up in the ear, it can sometimes cause pain or irritation and, if left untreated, may block the ears, causing hearing loss and other complications.
How do I clean my Ear?
“Earol” (Olive oil) is an effective and natural way to soften ear wax, keeping it moving as nature intended and reducing the need for human intervention.
Per BSHAA guidelines, we often recommend its regular use for those who suffer from ear wax build-up. If you have ongoing problems with ear wax, we recommend its regular use.
